WE LOVE OUR KIDS
Children are very important to us. We strive to create a place where the entire family can belong and love following Jesus.

COMMUNITY FOR YOU
There is a place for you at Fairmont UMC. You’ll find Groups are an easy place to belong and meet lifelong friends!
Children's Ministries at Fairmont

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Mark 10:14)
Fairmont values our youngest disciples and seeks to help guide them into a lifelong relationship with God through formation and fun! All volunteers & leaders are screened and Safe Sanctuaries trained to keep our young disciples safe.
Children’s Church
Children from 4 years old to 5th grade are invited to children’s church during morning worship, where they can grow in their faith through biblical stories, songs, games, activities, and crafts! Children accompany their parents to worship, then are guided to Children’s Church following the Gathering of All God’s Children in worship. On Communion Sundays, children return to receive Communion with their families.
Children in Worship
Children of all ages are always welcome in our worship services! Children’s bulletins are available from a greeter or usher, and children’s worship materials are located on a cart near the entrance of the Sanctuary. (See an usher for help!)
Children and youth also can serve as worship leaders or readers in our services, and as acolytes who bring the light of Christ into the service.
Nursery Care
During morning worship, infants and children up to age four are cared for by caring and trained nursery workers and volunteers. See an usher so that you can be guided to our nursery.
Children's Ministries
There are special events that also occur throughout the year for our children and their friends as they grow in their relationships with God and one another. Each year, we host a Community Trunk or Treat, an Impromptu Children's Nativity Service, a Mardi Gras/Ash Wednesday Celebration, a special Easter Egg Hunt, and Camp Live Differently (our version of Vacation Bible School that focuses on meeting the needs of others). It is our hope that the children's ministry at Fairmont shapes all of us more into the likeness of Jesus.
Youth Ministries at Fairmont

Fairmont values our young members and seeks to guide them into a lifelong relationship with God. We offer a variety of formational and fun programs for our members of all ages!
Youth Group
Middle and high schoolers are invited to youth group, which meets during the school year. Youth build relationships with God and each other through programs, mission opportunities, devotions, and trips. Youth also travel for North Carolina Conference youth events like Breakaway and Pilgrimage.
Currently, the youth group is meeting about twice a month. Talk to our pastor for more information!
Confirmation
Confirmation is an important milestone in one’s spiritual journey as youth confirm the promises made at their baptism and become professing members of the church. Along with adult mentors and the pastor, youth in middle and high school explore what it means to live as a Christian and grow in their love for God and their neighbor. They reflect on and learn about theology, the Bible, and service in the church and participate in retreats, service projects, small groups, and worship.
Youth in Worship
Youth can also serve as worship leaders in our service, as liturgists who lead prayers and Scripture readings, and as assistant who help livestream the service.
Mission Trips
Additionally, older youth are invited to participate on Fairmont’s intergenerational mission trips. These teams have traveled to rural Virginia, western and eastern North Carolina, coastal South Carolina, Florida, Jamaica, the Mississippi coast, Costa Rica, and other locations. Our work teams help with repairs to hurricane-damaged houses, paint, prep, build and more.
Mission Projects
Youth are a part of mission and service at Fairmont too! They participate in the CROP Walk, stock our Little Free Food Pantry, write cards to our shut-ins, serve the church and community through landscaping or construction, and cook and serve during Sunday Mission Lunches.
What Do We Do with Evil? by Richard Rohr
In this small, masterfully crafted book, Richard Rohr writes that “evil is subtle and the evils that are killing us all are usually well-disguised.” He sets the tone with these words by the mystic Julian of Norwich: “First we must fall, and then we recover from that fall — and both are the mercy of God.” Rohr then skillfully distills a half-century of his preaching and teaching on corporate evil, sin, forgiveness, and love.
Addressing the three traditional sources of evil, Rohr describes how Christianity has focused almost exclusively on the individual, “flesh” level while “the world and the devil basically got off scot-free for most of Christian history.” Challenging readers to look beyond personal moral failure, Rohr draws extensively on the teachings of Jesus and Paul to “increase personal responsibility and human solidarity.”
What Do We Do with Evil? invites us to encounter evil with a contemplative, nondual mind and to reflect on how we too are complicit in the social evils pervading our lives. He presents no easy solutions but leaves readers with principles and a process for resisting evil with patience and love.

Holy Envy
Holy Envy by Barbara Brown Taylor
on Zoom (Noon time) study: Mondays July 12th – Aug. 16th

“Holy envy” is what author and Episcopal priest Barbara Taylor Brown calls the appreciation of the best of religions other than one’s own. While so many fear that learning about other major religions might shake one’s religious commitment, Taylor Brown found that it made her realize the commonalities among the world’s great faiths and caused her to appreciate all adherents.
