What We Believe

Mission Statement

The mission of Fairmont UMC is to love God, worship joyfully, advocate peace and social justice, embrace diversity, and serve with Christ-like compassion. Fairmont embraces the diversity of God’s children and welcomes all into the full life and ministry of our congregation, regardless of race, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity.

What We Believe

Fairmont Values

Fairmont United Methodist Church (UMC) embraces all core values and principles of Christianity as a whole and more specifically, the primary tenets of Wesleyan Theology:

  1. Faith in and Love of Jesus Christ
  2. Integrating our Faith into our Everyday Lives
  3. Proclaiming The Word of God and Developing Disciples
  4. Embodying the Grace of God through Service, Stewardship and Social Justice

It is through the character of our church that we carry forth these values:

Radical Hospitality

We are called upon by God to open ourselves and our facilities in service of others–offering food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, care and comfort for the sick and faith for the doubters. “Open Hearts, Open Minds & Open Doors” is embraced at Fairmont.

Joyful Worship

We celebrate the presence of God in our lives through a blend of traditional and contemporary worship, artistic expression, a wide range of musical offerings, personal and communal prayer, gathering of the children, lay participation, imaginative messages, and plenty of humor.

Authenticity

We are a community of people, genuinely living out the teachings of Jesus (“without guile” as Jesus described Nathanael – John 1:47).

Unconditional Acceptance

We are a congregation that embraces diversity and welcomes all people, including those suffering or recovering from life, health, or emotional crises (seeking to judge not, lest we be judged – Matthew 7:1-2).

Risk-Taking Mission

Through direct engagement, we serve the least, the last, the lost, and the lonely, across the city and around the world. We cooperate with the larger community to relieve suffering and to share God’s grace (“Truly I tell you, as you did it to the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it to me.” – Matthew 25:40)

Nurturing Community

We work to build community in the life of our church, exemplified by our presence in crises and our journey together in faith. We value the ideas and leadership of all members. We encourage the participation of children and youth in service, study, and worship. We also are strengthened by our integral partnership with college students through the Raleigh Wesley Foundation.

Responsible Stewardship

As individuals and as a congregation, we responsibly use the resources with which God has entrusted us: our time, talents, service, and money. We respect and care for the whole earth.
