Our Social Justice team grew out of our self-study during 2007, our 70th anniversary year. We have worked together in three key areas: mental health reform, public education in Wake County, and are just beginning a more concerted effort at befriending the environment.
The Social Justice team is highlighting the needs of Afghan refugees.
“I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” – Matthew 25:35
Afghan refugees will be arriving in the Triangle area soon. We encourage you to support our ministry partners who are busy preparing to welcome them. Church World Service and World Relief have offices in Durham and are already working to resettle our new neighbors.
Right now, the biggest need is financial support. Church World Service will be providing housing, food, clothing, legal services and more and with very little time to plan. You can give through your local church to Advance #982540
Locally, Church World Service might have needs for volunteers eventually. They also have a few advocacy statements that churches might promote. You can see all of this information on the CWS website here.
There is a form on the site above that any person or church can fill out to be connected with the local resettlement office in Durham if they are within 100 miles.
World Relief is another Christian organization with an office in Durham. 801 Gilbert St #209 Durham, NC 27701 P: (919) 286-3496 F: (866) 599-4739
Their website has lots of details about who is coming, how they are vetted and what you can do to help. Read about it here.
United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is also prepared to assist with refugee resettlement through its partnership with Church World Service and is currently in conversation about assisting Church World Service with temporary housing for Afghan refugees. Those interested in supporting the UMCOR-CWS partnership can make gifts online here or by checks sent to Global Ministries/UMCOR, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-9068, with Advance #3022144 in the memo line. Read more here.
